The Pirates of Penzance is one of the most popular comic operas by Gilbert and Sullivan and was a favourite of our longest serving, and oldest, member, Reg Higley, who played leading parts many times during his career "treading the boards" for us and other local amateur operatic societies. This performance in his memory raised over £1,300 for Counsel and Care for the Elderly, the charity which recognised Reg as the Oldest Active Performer in Kent. Our thanks for this magnificent effort to Erith Theatre for generously donating the use of the theatre, to the D'Oyly Carte Opera Trust for providing the band parts for a token fee, and especially to the members of the orchestra, many of whom did not know Reg, but all of whom gave their services free - and that on the day of the Wimbledon Men's Final and the World Cup Final. And last but not least, of course, to everybody who came along and supported the event. Truly we couldn't have done it without them, and many others too numerous to mention here. Our sincere thanks to you all. | |
